New keywords for GOGO Padlocks

Posted by megan on October, 24th 2011

GOGO Padlocks are one of the most recent companies to enlist the services of the Real Web SEO team. We will be looking to increase the traffic to their website and improve their conversion rates, by enhancing the visibility of their site on search engines like Google.  GOGO Padlocks stock the largest range of high quality padlocks from well-known brands including: Abus, Faithfull and Henry Squires. They sell padlocks suitable for everyday use, as well as padlocks that have more specific purposes. GOGO Padlocks take security very seriously and are sure that they’ll have the perfect padlock to protect your most valuable items.

Although they are a fairly new client of ours, we have already experienced vast improvements in GOGO Padlocks’ SEO. They particularly wanted us to target the search phrases ‘brass padlocks,’ ‘weatherproof padlocks,’ ‘steel padlocks,’ and ‘aluminium padlocks’ as these are some of their best-selling products. Aluminium Padlocks are one of their most popular types of locks and are known for being light-weight, durable and suitable for items such as gates, garages and greenhouses. GOGO Padlocks sell a variety of aluminium padlocks, including combination padlocks which have a four digit code, often used to lock up bicycles and tool boxes. They also stock extra-thick aluminium padlocks which provide extra security and are suitable for industrial use. Through using organic SEO techniques such as blogging and external link generation, we have already achieved a first page position on Google for the keywords ‘Aluminium Padlocks.’ We have also bumped GOGO Padlocks up to the first result, on the second page of Google, for the keywords ‘weatherproof padlocks.’

Having quality content displayed on each product page is also essential when it comes to improving a company’s SEO. Our team have ensured that on each page of GOGO Padlocks ecommerce site, there is an option to ‘expand’ information, which will display extra material about a particular type of padlock. This content will inform customers about the different types of padlocks, as well as tell them what that a particular padlock is suitable for.

The Real Web SEO team are continuing to work on GOGO Padlocks’ SEO and hope to reach a top result for the keywords ‘aluminium padlocks’ as well as improve the positioning of the other key search phrases.

Long Tail Keywords – The Path To Keyword Domination

kSo you want your website to rank #1 for your main keyword – who doesn’t?! So where do you start? A lot of SEO newbies aim right towards their main keyword, let’s say they wanted to sell Umbrellas they would be optimising for the keyword “umbrellas” and expect to hit the first page of Google [...]

Different spellings of the same keywords

How many different ways can you use the word “Amaze”?  You could have “Amaze”, “Amazed”, “Amazing” and “Amazes”. Do any of your main keywords have alternative spellings? If you sold “fridges” online for example then “refrigerators” would be an example. Missing out on alternative spellings of your main keyword could lower your traffic levels.  On-site [...]

SEO improvements for Controliss

Posted by megan on October, 31st 2011

We have been working closely with the remote control blinds retailer, Controliss, to improve their brand design and increase awareness. This has been achieved through implementing specific internet marketing strategies, relating to the company’s SEO, branding and advertising.  Our web design experts firstly re-designed their website, changing it from being noisy and bright, which didn’t quite fit the home-furnishings industry, to luxurious and calm. This fresh design helped to promote their new image as being up-market and desirable, much like the products that they sell. Controliss offer a wide range of blinds in various styles including, venetians, roller blinds and the classic roman blinds. All of their products are powered by motors that run on either batteries or electric mains, so there’s no need for messy and dangerous cords. Controliss have even made it possible to control your curtains using an electric curtain track, which also works at a touch of a button, similar to the remote control blinds.

Search engine growth is a key element to our internet market strategy for Controliss, and involves the help of our SEO experts.  Along with changing the branding of their website, our web developers also had to make alterations to enhance the websites compatibility with search engines. We have been developing key search terms for the company, using organic techniques such as blogging and external link generation, in hope to achieve a higher position on search engine results. Controliss are currently the third result on Google, for the keywords ‘electric blinds’ and ‘remote control blinds,’ showing just how much has been achieved. We are also focussing on keywords relating to their products and have achieved a second page result for the keywords ‘wood blinds’ and ‘vertical blinds.’ Blogging is an important element when it comes to improving SEO, as when you feature key words in blog posts, they will be recognised by Google if the content is unique and of high quality.

Our internet marketing campaigns have been extremely successful so far, bringing more traffic to the Controliss website, with the added help of existing offline campaigns.

Can I Remove Omniture Code and Install Google Analytics?

September 21, 2011By Jill Whalen

Hi Jill,

Thanks for the great information. I just have one question.

We inherited a client from a major industry network and they used Omniture and SiteCatalyst to track their analytics. I am familiar with Google Analytics. I don't want to negatively affect their current ranking (because it's pretty good), but I need to track the Google Analyticsnumbers, so is there any harm in going in and dropping in a Google account ID and getting rid of the Omniture info in the code? I feel like we're flying blind without having the info. So we need to generate it from scratch and use Google Analytics and Web Developer tools to help get some groundwork.

Thanks for your help!

Josh

++Jill's Response++

Hi Josh,

I know how you feel because I was just reviewing some sites that used Omniture/SiteCatalyst as well. When you're used to Google Analytics, it can be very difficult to find what you're looking for in a different program. That said, Omniture is a very expensive program that provides a ton of data. Therefore, I'm assuming there are people within your client's company who are reviewing that data regularly. If you simply remove the code, you could mess them up big-time!

I would ask them to provide you with access to their Omniture -- then you won't be flying blind at all. Even though you (and I) may prefer Google Analytics because we're used to it, Omniture is very good and in some ways even better. (You just have to learn how to find everything.)

You could also ask the client if they would be willing to add the Google Analytics code in addition to Omniture. Many sites use both, so that wouldn't be a problem. I would strongly recommend NOT removing any code from a client's site without their permission! In the case of Omniture, they're likely paying a lot of money for it to be there.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Jill

Two Different Target Markets

September 21, 2011By Jill Whalen

Hi Jill,

My client has a website that sells only a few products; however, the product line fits two very separate, entirely different vertical markets ? the restaurant industry and printing companies.
In order to separate the two from one another so that the printer people and the restaurant people clearly know what to do when they hit the site, I thought I'd create a splash page to direct the two disparate industries. This is done very well with the splash page on the Esprit website.

From there, I'd make an SEO'ed home page for the restaurants and one for the printers, but keep the home page splash page as a clear optional choice of which direction to go.

Can this sort of splash page be used effectively to separate two targets without inhibiting the SEO?

Any insight you would provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Debi

++Jill's Response++

Hi Debi,

I'd never recommend a splash page that didn't have indexable content. What I would typically recommend (and this is without knowing any details other than what you sent me) is that you provide information on the home page about the company and its products in general, and then describe the two different target audience segments that they sell to. Within each blurb of information for the specific segment, you'd link to the section of the site specifically for that segment for more information.

While it's an old article, my friend Karon Thackston explains a bit more here. Most of that article is applicable, but the main part I'm talking about is the paragraph "Segmenting on the Web."

Hope this helps!

Best,

Jill

Why Both Weight Loss and Google Rankings Are Limited Goals

October 19, 2011By Jill Whalen

My husband and I were talking the other night about one of his pet peeves: When people start exercising and eating healthier, they usually measure their success by how much weight they've lost (or not) as shown to them by their trusty scale. It annoys him because, Image Credit: Ben Stassenwhile losing weight is one sign that you're doing things right, after a certain point, it can only tell you so much.

It reminded me of my own pet peeve: how people usually measure the success of their SEO work by checking how well their site ranks in the search engines. Yet, similar to weight loss being a poor main goal for your health and fitness regime, where your pages rank for specific keyword phrases is also a poor main goal.

Healthier Body ? Healthier Website

Your principal goal when eating in moderation and exercising regularly should be to become healthier overall, and ultimately to live a longer and more satisfying life. And your chief goal with an SEO program should be to create a better overall website and make more money from it -- which, incidentally, can also make for a more satisfying life! ;)

Writing articles nobody is really interested in about the history of your products is like eating lots of junk food. It's empty calories. There's no value in it to anyone (except perhaps the donut store) and it keeps you from eating the good stuff. Writing keyword-filled content just for the sake of search engines works the same way: It keeps you from adding true value to your website. While you can try to cover your big ole body in a floral mu'umu'u, let's face it, you're still out of shape underneath it all.

And it's the same with your website. There's no sense adding good content on top of bad. If it's already full of junk (food), it's time to trim it down and cut out the crap (content).

So how do you measure the effects of trimming the fat?

I'm not saying that weighing yourself and checking up on your rankings are utterly useless. In the beginning, both can be a good way to make sure you're on the right track. Let's say you get all into your new health kick because none of your clothes fit and you can barely make it up a flight of stairs without having to stop for a rest. The more you exercise and eat right, the better the numbers on your scale are going to look. This can definitely keep you motivated. But the weight loss itself is only one result of your success. Other results might be that you look and feel better. In fact, even if you lost only a few pounds, if you're eating better and exercising regularly, you're likely a whole lot healthier and may even have a lot more energy and overall focus.

And so it is with SEO.

When your rankings for a few key terms move from "nowhere to be found" to being on the first page in Google, it shows you that you're certainly on the right track. But here's what is more important: You're likely seeing not only more visitors to your website, but more targeted visitors. And just as more energy results from a good exercise regimen, more conversions and sales come from more targeted website visitors.

But you can only lose so much weight (and check so many rankings).

If you keep up with your fitness program you'll probably get to a point where -- even though you're back in your skinny jeans -- the needle on the scale has stopped moving in the "right" direction. When you measure your success by how many pounds you're losing, this can be confusing. You know you're exercising often and eating correctly, but can't understand why you're not still losing weight. And this is where my husband's pet peeve comes in.

According to him, the more you exercise, the more muscle mass you put on your body. This in turn may even cause you to gain weight because muscle weighs more than fat. At this point, it's silly to be constantly weighing yourself and worrying why you're not losing weight anymore. So at this point you can change your goals. After all, you are probably looking fabulous with a whole new body shape. You're healthy, fit and trim. Your scale isn't measuring your lost percentage of body fat, nor is it taking into consideration the fact that you're stronger and no longer short of breath. So why keep looking at the scale?

It's the same with your website.

Once you know you're on the right track with your SEO, you no longer need to check your rankings. They simply don't tell the whole story. Rankings don't make you money or make your site convert. They don't show you how healthy (or not) your website is.

After the initial stages of your SEO program, it's time to put away your rank checking software (or scale) and adopt new goals -- start counting how often your phone rings, your contact form gets filled out, and how fabulously your website is converting all those extra targeted search engine visitors. Then sit down and have a healthy fruit smoothie -- because you deserve it!

HRA 317: Wrap-up

October 19, 2011That's all for today!

Wondering where the reference to exercise in today's article came from? Well, after a good 5 years of avoiding joining the gym with my husband, I finally agreed to sign up. He had been going with our son, Tim, but with Tim off to college, my husband was back on his own. And honestly, I did realize I need to get off my ass more often too, so I figured what the heck. If I had to go alone, I'd likely keep putting it off. But since my husband is already in the routine, I kinda have no choice! So far, so good. I'm just doing things like the elliptical machine and I can read or watch Netflix shows on my iPad while there, so it's not too bad.

In addition, in my quest to find some new and interesting things to do that don't involve SEO (or drinking ;), I also signed up for improv classes at our local adult ed program! The first class is next week, so I'll let you know how it goes in the next newsletter.

Catch you in 2 weeks! ? Jill

HRA 316: Wrap-up

October 5, 2011That's all for today!

I don't have time for much of a wrap-up today due to watching my real-time analytics and playing on Facebook and Twitter while I was supposed to be writing this...sorry! And as I write this, it's nearly time for me to run out to this week's SEMNE event (I guess I'd better hop in the shower!). More next time.
